The government on Friday unveiled new draft legislation banning use of e-scooters by people younger than 17 and toughening restrictions on riding the light vehicles while making insurance compulsory for their users.

The Transport Ministry bill followed a recent series of severe accidents, some fatal, involving children on e-scooters.

Deputy Transport Minister Giorgos Kotsiras said urgent action was required to introduce a stricter and more effective framework for the vehicles, which have become commonplace on Greek streets.

“Our intention is clear,” he said. “To boost road safety, reduce the number of accidents and protect human life, showing particular concern for children.”

A ministry statement said the proposed law, if adopted, would forbid children under 17 from riding e-scooters on streets, with an exception made for handicapped people, on pain of a €150 fine.
