Nearly 2,700 people were caught all over Greece and fined up to €700 last week for riding motorcycles or e-scooters without crash helmets, police said Monday, more than a year after launching a major, sustained crackdown on traffic violations.

A police statement said that 2,438 of the people fined between June 29 and July 5 were drivers and 251 were passengers. A very substantial 754 e-scooter drivers were among those caught, as well as 53 motorcycle delivery riders and 54 people riding all-terrain vehicles.

Most of the fines – 903 – were issued in the Greater Athens region, while the southern Aegean Sea resort islands that include Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes and Kos saw nearly 600 violations.

Only six people were caught and fined in western Macedonia.
