Bikers and e-scooter riders are showing slightly greater compliance with the mandatory use of crash helmets, according to new police data released Monday.

Even then, traffic police fined more than 1,900 people in the week of May 18-24 for riding without helmets. The previous week, more than 2,500 violations had been recorded.

A significant portion of the fines were issued to e-scooter riders – 658 compared to 919 a week earlier.

Most of the violations were recorded in the Greater Athens region, followed by the southern Aegean Sea islands and Crete.

Traffic police have maintained for more than 10 months an unprecedented drive to improve road safety by enforcing a new, much stricter highway code that involves high fines and tough penalties for formerly common offences such as drink-driving, failure to use seat belts or crash helmets and running red lights.
