Nearly 2,200 people on motorcycles, e-scooters and all-terrain vehicles were caught and fined in the first week of June nationwide for not wearing crash helmets, police said Thursday.

A police statement said a total of about 20,000 people were stopped during that period. Just under 2,000 drivers – including 46 delivery riders – were fined for not wearing helmets, and 167 passengers.

Out of the drivers, 624 were riding e-scooters, 13 were on tricycles and 15 were on ATVs.

Most of the violations were in the Greater Athens region, where 908 fines were issued. Western Macedonia was the most law-abiding area with only seven fines issued.

Police have mounted a major crackdown on traffic violations for nearly a year, after the government passed new legislation drastically increasing fines and penalties for highway code breaches.
