E-scooter riders accounted for nearly one in three fines levied for non-use of crash helmets nationwide in the second week of June, authorities said Monday.
A police statement said out of a total 2,370 people fined, 1,501 were driving motorbikes, 170 were passengers, 680 were riding e-scooters and 16 were on all-terrain vehicles.
Most of the violations were recorded in the Greater Athens region, while the highest level of compliance was in western Macedonia. Motorcyclists are fined €350 for failing to wear a helmet, and e-scooter riders €30.
For nearly a year, Greek police have mounted an unprecedentedly determined and protracted campaign against highway code violations such as drink-driving, speeding, driving while talking on the phone and not wearing crash helmets or seatbelts.
At the same time, the government has introduced drastically steeper fines and penalties for traffic violations.
