A fire in Imizamo Yethu destroyed nearly 50 structures on Monday night.
An overnight fire destroyed about 50 informal structures in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, leaving families to search through the ruins of their homes for anything they could salvage.
Among them was Frederick Kaukungwa, who used two hammers to sift through the charred remains of his home on Hughenden Street on Tuesday morning as he began planning how to rebuild.
His home was gone, and rebuilding could not wait.
“It's all gone, and now that we lost everything, we have to think of how we are going to rebuild our lives, starting with the roof over our heads,” he said.
