The latest fire in Madiba Square behind the Yellow Hall has destroyed several shacks in the early hours of this morning.

A massive fire broke out early this morning in Mandela Park, Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, destroying informal structures and leaving residents in a state of emergency.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service received the alarm at approximately 6:50 am. The first officer on the scene quickly assessed the situation and requested additional resources, including the Incident Management Team (IMT) Type 4, to help contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further, according to Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse.

“Various crews are on scene, and firefighters are actively trying to stop the spread of fire and minimising the damage,” Carelse said.

The City's Disaster Risk Management Centre estimated that about 60 structures were destroyed in the fire and teams have been activated to do an assessment.
