Homes and informal structures lie in ruins after a fire tore through Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay on Wednesday morning, leaving dozens of families displaced.

Residents of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay say repeated fires have left many families struggling to recover after another blaze destroyed an estimated 60 structures on Wednesday morning, displacing dozens of households.

Community committee member Nonzame Ludwele said she woke up after hearing a child screaming for help as the fire spread through the settlement.

"It was around 7 when I woke up after I heard a child screaming asking to be helped with water because it was burning. I went outside and I saw the fire. The child was trying to escape. It happened right at the corner of my home. I had just woken up and had no time to do anything. Everything burned."

Ludwele said it was not the first time she had lost her belongings in a fire.
