Firefighters spray water onto smouldering structures as crews work to extinguish the blaze in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay.
A fire in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, has destroyed approximately 60 structures, displacing dozens of families. Residents say repeated fires in the area have left many struggling to recover from the ongoing devastation.
Community committee member Nonzame Ludwele said she woke up after hearing a child screaming for help as the fire spread through the settlement.
"It was around 7 when I woke up after I heard a child screaming asking to be helped with water because it was burning. I went outside and I saw the fire. The child was trying to escape. It happened right at the corner of my home. I had just woken up and had no time to do anything. Everything burned."
Homes and informal structures lie in ruins after a fire tore through Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay on Wednesday morning, leaving dozens of families displaced.
