Authorities have detained three men in connection with a series of blazes across the country as fire crews battled 36 separate agricultural and forestry fires over a 24-hour period.
In the southern city of Nafplio, a 67-year-old man was charged with negligent arson and fined €3,609 after sparks from an angle grinder ignited a nearby field.
On the island of Evia, a 57-year-old man was arrested in Halkida after a vehicle fire spread into farmland, burning 12 acres.
Meanwhile, arson investigators on Skyros detained a man with mental health issues who is suspected of causing two blazes, including an August 15 wildfire that consumed over 1,000 acres.
The arrests come amid an intense summer fire season. Firefighters contained 31 of the 36 latest blazes in their early stages, though five remain active.
