A particularly interesting session at the Athens bourse on Wednesday saw energy and banking stocks advance, whereas the majority of stocks headed lower, along with the benchmark. The aggravating situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and the upcoming interest rate hikes continue to worry market observers regarding inflationary trends and pressure on state budgets, while sending bond rates higher.

The Euronext Athens (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,648.58 points, shedding 0.32% from Tuesday’s 2,657.05 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index contracted 0.25% to end at 6,777.06 points.

The banks index, on the other hand, advanced 0.41%, thanks to Alpha rising 1.72%, Piraeus collecting 1.04% and National grabbing 0.80%. Bank of Cyprus gave up 1.70%, CrediaBank parted with 0.70%, Optima dropped 0.58% and Eurobank declined 0.54%.

In total, 34 stocks obtained gains, 70 showed losses and 18 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to €305.3 million, up from Tuesday’s €257 million.
