Sellers maintained the upper hand during Thursday’s session on the Greek bourse, with the local market declining in line with most other eurozone markets following the predictable interest rate hike of the European Central Bank. Banks and a number of other blue chips advanced, with some of them climbing to all-time highs. The rise of oil rates continues to put pressure on markets, though Motor Oil suffered some profit-taking to drop 3.57%.

The Euronext Athens (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,697.58 points, shedding 0.15% from Wednesday’s 2,701.69 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index expanded 0.01% to end at 6,919.69 points, though mid-caps contracted 0.63%.

The banks index improved 0.45%, as Optima jumped 5.45%, Alpha earned 1.72%, Bank of Cyprus climbed 0.96% and National rose 0.32%, while Eurobank fell 0.53%, Piraeus dropped 0.33% and CrediaBank gave up 0.10%.

In total, 36 stocks reported gains, 64 sustained losses and 24 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to €397.1 million, down from Tuesday’s €429.6 million.
