Banks stocks kept the main index at Athinon Avenue in the black on Tuesday, despite the overall picture that saw the majority of stocks suffer losses – though the credit sector continued its ascent – including a number of blue chips such as oil companies. The index climbed to a new decade-high, in line with the calm reaction of most eurozone markets to the sell-off in Tokyo and Seoul. The banks’ results season begins on Wednesday with Piraeus.
The Euronext Athens (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,521.18 points, adding 0.13% to Monday’s 2,517.84 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index expanded 0.18% to end at 6,423.71 points, though mid-caps contracted 0.12%.
The banks index advanced 0.81%, as Alpha surged 2.56%, Piraeus grabbed 1.69%, National obtained 0.84% and Eurobank rose 0.16%, while CrediaBank fell 3.85%, Optima gave up 1.14% and Bank of Cyprus lost 0.88%.
In total, 40 stocks boasted gains, 63 posted losses and 20 remained unchanged.
Turnover amounted to €367.4 million, up from Monday’s €312.7 million.
