In a novel initiative, the district administration has established a District Counselling Centre on the Collectorate campus to counsel and guide the school and college students.District Collector Anand Mohan and Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramanian Shastri inaugurated the facility on Wednesday.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Anand Mohan said the younger generation, especially school and college students easily get influenced by negative social media posts and were exposed to liquor, tobacco and even drugs. Consequently, the younger generation was suffering from lack of attention in the classroom and interest in studies, depression, anger, violence, examination fear that collectively create dropouts.At the same time, a few more children undergo the trauma of child abuse, child marriage, physical and emotional harassment by the family members, relatives and friends. A large number of children get addicted to mobile phone and online games.“Hence, we’ve established this counselling centre at the Collectorate to identify the children’s exact problems and rehabilitate them from these habits through proper counselling and guidance. Instead of legally punishing the young offenders, we need to counsel and guide them as they have got a future,” Mr. Anand Mohan said.The District Counselling Centre, established by District Child Protection Unit, is a joint venture of Departments of School Education, Higher Education, Technical Education, Public Health, Social Welfare and Police. Qualified counsellors and professional psychologists will be there between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on all working days to counsel and guide the students and their parents or guardians.“The personal information about the youth coming here for counselling and guidance will be closely guarded secret and will never be shared with anyone at any cost,” assured Mr. Anand Mohan.
