A subpoena is no longer just a warning at the Madlanga Commission, with North West businessman Suliman Carrim now facing criminal charges for failing to appear, while Major-General Feroz Khan’s hospitalisation has put another witness’s absence under the spotlight.
This comes as Khan was due to testify on Tuesday but failed to appear following his reported readmission to hospital, with his lawyer seeking a postponement.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said Madlanga had instructed the commission’s secretary to lay the charge against Carrim.
“Justice Madlanga had instructed the secretary of the commission to lay criminal charges against Mr Carrim. And indeed, that has been done. The criminal charges have been laid by the secretary, on behalf of the commission, and that matter is now in the hands of the commission’s Recommendations Task Team.”
Carrim appeared before the commission on March 9 and 10, but failed to return to complete his evidence, citing medical reasons.
