The Madlanga Commission said it would be laying criminal charges against controversial North West businessman Suliman Carrim for failing to appear before the inquiry.

Carrim was expected to appear at the Madlanga Commission on Friday, four months after he allegedly collapsed at a gym following a heart attack.

On Friday morning Chair Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has directed the secretary, Dr Nolitha Vukuza, to facilitate the process of bringing charges against Carrim, stressing the importance of the commission adhering to its established procedures.

Madlanga said the commission must protect the integrity of its processes, warning that failure to do so could undermine witnesses’ confidence in appearing before the inquiry.

“If we don’t do this, other witnesses will simply not come and testify,” Madlanga said.
