Seeking the replacement of defunct valves fitted in drinking water supply pipes, which result in profuse leaking of hundreds of litres of precious drinking water, a group of residents from ward 51 submitted petition to Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju on Tuesday.The petitioners said the valves fitted in the distribution pipelines carrying drinking water from Mahizhchi Nagar overhead tank to Thiru Nagar and Sathyam Colony under ward 51 were defunct for the past several weeks. Consequently, hundreds of litres of precious drinking water was going waste.Hence, the officials of Melapalayam Zone of Tirunelveli Corporation should inspect the spots and replace the defunct valves immediately to save the water and ensure effective supply of drinking water to Thiru Nagar and Sathyam Colony, the petitioners said.A group of Social Democratic Party cadres submitted a petition seeking the repairing of damaged underground drainage manholes and re-laying of the damaged roads damaged in underground drainage work. The petitioners said the manholes installed as part of the underground drainage work along the Abul Kalam Azad Road in Melapalayam were yet to be replaced and fitted properly.Moreover, the damaged paver block road along this road had not been re-laid despite repeated appeals from the public. Consequently, accidents had become very common along this road everyday. Hence, the Corporation should replace the damaged manholes and re-lay the road, they said.On behalf of Nadar Mahamai Sangam, Kariyiruppu in ward 2 a petition demanding the laying of road in Sundara Vinayagar Temple Street, Nadar Sangam Street and Nadar Sangam North Street.The Azhagar Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association from ward 54 also submitted a petition seeking laying of roads in their colony housing more than 300 families. “We’ve been submitting petition for the past few years to press this demand. However, the Corporation, which is collecting property, drinking water and professional tax from us refuses to fulfill even our basic needs,” said the president of the Association V. Meenakshisundaram.MDMK office-bearer M.S. Sudharshan submitted a petition seeking the removal of garbage heaped near Tamil Development and Cultural Centre in NGO Colony and the renovation of the Jawahar Ground in Palayamkottai after removing the temporary shops on the ground.
