Residents of Velachery have urged Chennai Metrowater to expedite implementation of the 24x7 water supply scheme, besides replacing ageing water and sewer lines in the locality. They have recently submitted a representation to Chennai Metrowater authorities outlining their demands.Residents from various parts of Velachery have sought an increase in water supply from the existing 14 million litres of water per day (mld) to nearly 18-20 mld to enable tail-end areas like AGS Colony, Andal Nagar, Buwaneswari Nagar to get sufficient water supply.V. Sundar, a resident of Velachery, said the water and sewer lines in the area, which were laid three decades ago, have deteriorated and required to be replaced. Many tail-end areas suffered erratic water supply or inadequate supply because of old network.Members of AGS Colony Welfare Association have also urged Metrowater to prioritise the upgrading AGS Colony sewage pumping station, which is located amidst residential localities, by installing odour control unit.Various areas in Velachery like AGS Colony, Venkateswara Nagar, and Ram Nagar often experienced sewage overflow. Geetha Ganesh, the association’s secretary, said such incidents of sewage overflow occur once in two months and there is a dire need for replacing the network.“We also requested the authorities to simultaneously change the lines along with implementation of the ring main distribution system to ensure equitable water supply,” she said. Metrowater authorities have assured the residents that the issues would be looked into.Residents of Thalayari Street, Royapettah, too complained of foul odour in drinking water. Satish Kumar, a resident, noted that the area was facing the recurring issue owing to old network and residents were unable to use the drinking water. Published - July 11, 2026 07:37 pm IST
