He signed a long-term contract extension through June 2029, racked up Europa League minutes at age 19, and proved he can operate at both centre-back and right-back. His reward? A logjam in Forest’s defensive depth chart that has multiple clubs now lining up to take him on loan before the transfer window slams shut.
Millwall, Watford, Hibernian, and Preston North End are all reportedly keen on bringing the young defender in on a temporary deal. The summer deadline is fast approaching, and Abbott’s camp appears motivated to find a landing spot where actual first-team football is on the menu rather than a seat on a Premier League bench.
A crowded pitch for a crowded position
Abbott’s situation is a familiar one for promising academy products at top-flight clubs. He made three Premier League appearances during the 2025-26 season and featured in seven Europa League matches, a taste of senior football that was just enough to prove he belongs but not enough to constitute a real runway for development.
Millwall, managed by Alex Neil, are reportedly looking to shore up their defensive options and see Abbott as a fit for what they need. Watford’s interest is perhaps even more telling. The Hornets have reportedly assembled a seven-man shortlist of centre-back targets, and Abbott’s name is on it. Preston North End rounds out the English contingent of suitors, while Hibernian offers Scottish Premiership football and regular minutes in a different competitive environment.
