Tshepo Tshite won the Hollywoodbets Durban 10k with a dramatic final surge to overtake Kenyan Stephen Kangethe in the closing stages in Kingsmead Stadium.
Tshepo Tshite produced a spectacular finish to win the Hollywoodbets Durban 10K in 28:18, using the speed that has made him South Africa’s fastest-ever 1500m athlete to overhaul Kenyan Stephen Kangethe in the closing stages.
Kangethe entered Kingsmead Stadium in front and appeared to have done enough to claim victory. But Tshite, an Olympic and World Championships representative over the middle distances, produced a devastating final kick on the grass to pull away from the Kenyan and win by three seconds.
The victory underlined Tshite’s growing pedigree over 10km. Earlier in the year, he finished third at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K in March, narrowly missing the 28-minute barrier, and Sunday’s performance further demonstrated his potential at the longer distance.
“I know I am capable of running something, but the most important thing is all about learning how to run 10K,” Tshite told the media during the post-race conference. “Remember, the roads and track are not the same. I come from the 800m and I’ve been trying to upgrade to the 1500m, so for now it’s all about learning the distance.”
