The script may have been written for Brenda Jepchirchir to make history in Durban, but Doreen Cherop had other ideas.
The Kenyan produced a perfectly judged race before unleashing a devastating finishing kick to overhaul her compatriot in the closing stages and claim victory in the women's Absa Run Your City Durban 10K on Sunday.
Cherop crossed the line in 30:43 after timing her challenge to perfection, denying the pre-race favourite, who finished second in 30:52 after leading for much of the contest.
Former world steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech completed a Kenyan clean sweep of the podium in 31:25, while Durban's Tayla Kavanagh continued her outstanding season by finishing fourth in 31:28 as the first South African home.
