Kenyan Doreen Cherop outsprinted defending champion Glenrose Xaba in the closing stages of the race to take the Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10K on Sunday.
Kenyan Doreen Cherop produced another late-race masterclass to edge defending champion Glenrose Xaba in a thrilling women’s race at the Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10K on Sunday, but the South African emerged from the battle with renewed confidence ahead of next month’s World Athletics Road Running Championships.
Cherop, who also won the Absa Durban 10K last month, timed her decisive move to perfection, breaking away from Xaba inside the final kilometre before holding on to win in 31:35.
Xaba, who had matched the Kenyan stride for stride for much of the race, crossed the line three seconds later in 31:38, with another Kenyan, Deborah Chemutai, completing the podium in 31:59.
For Xaba, the result was another indication that her preparations for the world championships are heading in the right direction.
