Civil protection authorities were on high alert on Thursday due to a very high risk of wildfire in five regions of Greece.

Attica, Evia, Crete, as well as the North and South Aegean will face a category-4 wildfire threat on the country’s five-notch scale, according to the Fire Risk Map issued on Wednesday.

The week-long heatwave will persist with temperatures hovering between 36 and 39 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country.

The weather service said the hot spell will start to ease on Saturday, with temperatures lowering to 34 degrees.
