The death of Brazilian Gabriel Oliveira, 24, in Cambodia in July 2025 exposes suspicions of human trafficking in the country, which has become the main destination for Brazilian victims recorded by the Ministry of Justice.Gabriel left the interior of Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil, after being lured by a job offer in Bangkok, Thailand. However, upon arrival, he was taken by van to a city in Cambodia unknown to his family. He died under unclear circumstances. The company that allegedly employed him attributed his death to a microwave explosion, without providing evidence.
The case is being treated alongside that of architect Daniela Marys, 37, who was arrested in Sisophon, also in Cambodia, after becoming a victim of human trafficking. She was caught with drugs at the scam compound in Poipet, where she was being held. According to her account, the pills were planted after she refused to participate in a criminal scheme that would have forced her to pose as a federal police officer in order to deceive Brazilians.
