The Renault 5 is getting a freshen-up, with more range, a new entry-level battery, a handful of useful tech upgrades and, most eye-catching of all, a new set of gold wheels that give the little electric hatchback more than a hint of one of Renault’s greatest hits.Choose the gold-finish Techno wheels with Midnight Blue paint and there’s a definite whiff of Clio Williams about it. The original Clio Williams hot hatches of the 1990s became icons, created when Renault was supplying engines to the Williams Formula 1 team, and the blue-and-gold combination is still one of the most recognisable Renault looks around.There’s substance behind the 5’s new look, too. Renault has made changes to the lower body and door mirrors, as well as tweaking the battery electronics, to squeeze a few more miles from both of the existing battery options. The 40kWh Urban Range version, with its 118bhp motor, rises from 194 to 196 miles, while the 52kWh Comfort Range car, with 148bhp, gets the bigger gain, climbing from 255 to 267 miles.New, more aerodynamic door mirrors and lower body have helped boost the Renault 5's range (Renault)There’s also a new version of the entry-level Five on the way in Europe. It uses a 36.5kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a new 108bhp motor, giving it a claimed range of up to 190 miles. It gets a 6.6kW AC charger and, importantly, 80kW DC rapid charging as standard, while Renault says it’ll do 0-31mph (50 km/h) in 3.5 seconds. Orders for the revised range are now opening across European markets, with some of the new features due to follow in the coming weeks.Whether that new urban-focused entry-level version comes to the UK is still under review and could depend on if it qualifies for the Government’s Electric Car Grant. Renault hasn’t confirmed the wider package of changes for British cars yet, either, although it’s expected that at least some will arrive here. The new colours and other model-year tweaks could well form part of a 2027 model year update, while the more substantial technical changes are still being considered for the UK range.Those colour changes include a new Flame Red, plus Metallic Schist Grey on selected versions. There are also new roof options, including Starry Black, Red and Warm Titanium, while the gold Techno wheels are available on Techno and Iconic Cinq models. New Vibrant5 and Hyper5 roof and wing decals join the personalisation menu, too, and Iconic models switch from heathered yellow upholstery to heathered blue.Inside, the Renault 5 gains a new magnetic, cooled Qi2 wireless phone charger, with Renault claiming it can restore up to 50 per cent of a phone battery in an hour without overheating. Smart driving mode also replaces MySense, automatically switching between Eco, Comfort and Sport depending on how the car is being driven, although drivers can still make their own changes through the touchscreen or by voice. The emergency call system is also being updated to work with 4G networks.Renault is adding 2GB of mobile data a month for three years on eligible cars in Europe, enough according to the company for up to 40 hours of standard-quality music streaming or three hours of video. Google’s Gemini AI assistant is also heading into the 5 through an optional over-the-air update, allowing more natural voice conversations than the existing Google Assistant.The revised Renault 5 range will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, by which time we may have a clearer idea of exactly which of the updates are heading across the Channel.
