Renault has updated one of its bestselling models, the battery-electric Renault 5. Both the Urban Range version with a 40 kWh battery and the Comfort Range model with 52 kWh have received technical and aerodynamic improvements. As a result, their WLTP ranges increase to up to 315 and 430 kilometres, respectively. The smaller battery version gains three kilometres, while the larger battery adds 20 kilometres.
A more significant change in some European markets is the introduction of a new entry-level version of the electric compact car. Renault is combining an 80 kW motor with a 36.5 kWh LFP battery, providing a range of up to 305 kilometres. The two existing powertrains deliver 90 and 110 kW and use 40 and 52 kWh batteries, respectively, both with nickel-based NMC chemistry. Reports that Renault could introduce LFP batteries for the R5 first emerged in British media over the summer.
Renault has now confirmed those plans. The new entry-level powertrain will be offered with the Five trim. In markets such as France, where the Five has so far combined the 90 kW motor with the 40 kWh battery, the new 80 kW/LFP configuration replaces that version. The new Five also gains DC fast-charging capability at up to 80 kW, which was previously unavailable. Renault Deutschland announced the Five trim in 2024 with a starting price of €24,900, but the version has yet to appear in the German configurator. The new Renault 5 Five with LFP batteries is therefore unlikely to be offered in Germany for the time being.
