The counsel to Comrade Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, Andrew N. Elekeokwuri, has formally approached the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, seeking appropriate human rights engagement over the activist’s prolonged detention and the continued pendency of his criminal proceedings before the Federal High Court, Warri Judicial Division.
The request, contained in a letter dated August 18, 2026, was addressed to the Office of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Nigeria.
The correspondence concerns Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, Charge No. FHC/WR/92C/2022, and Comrade Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho v. Federal Republic of Nigeria, Suit No. ECW/CCJ/APP/28/25, pending before the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to the lawyer, the request is not an invitation for the United Nations to determine Aghogho’s guilt or innocence, interfere with the jurisdiction of the Nigerian courts or ECOWAS Court, or determine the merits of the criminal allegations.
