A group of human rights activists, lawyers , social media influencers and concerned Nigerians have have petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, requesting the discontinuance of the criminal charge filed against the human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore.
The groups, which gathered at the Federal Ministry of Justice wielding placards, called on the minister to end what they described as a farcical and sham trial against the activist.
They noted that the case was politically motivated and aimed at disqualifying Sowore from participating in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
In a letter dated June 29, 2026, addressed to the AGF by the lawyers and signed by Barr. Abubakar Marshal, they urged the minister to exercise his constitutional powers under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and relevant provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to terminate the proceedings.
