The organisation made the demand in a statement issued on Monday following the ruling by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja, who ordered the remand of Sowore in Kuje Correctional Centre.
Global human rights organisation, the Amnesty International has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, describing his detention as arbitrary and warning that the prosecution represents a dangerous assault on freedom of expression and civic space in Nigeria.
The organisation made the demand in a statement issued on Monday following the ruling by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja, who ordered the remand of Sowore in Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Umar ordered on Monday that Sowore be held in prison till Wednesday, June 24, pending the hearing and determination of his motion seeking a stay of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant earlier issued against him.
Sowore is facing cyberbullying charges over social media posts made in 2025, in which he referred to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.”
