The activist had requested an adjournment to June 16, but the court ruled that the request did not provide sufficient justification.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International has condemned the revocation of the bail granted to human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, describing the move as a threat to freedom of expression and due process.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 19, 2026, Amnesty International said the revocation of Sowore’s bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja represents a deeply troubling development that risks undermining the rights to liberty, fair trial, and freedom of expression in Nigeria.

Sowore’s bail was revoked on June 16, 2026, by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja after Sowore allegedly failed to appear in court for his ongoing cybercrime and defamation trial.

The case stems from his August 2025 social media post calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal,” which the Department of State Services (DSS) charged as cyberbullying and defamation.
