Traffic police recorded more than 5,000 traffic violations across the greater Athens region in a week-long operation, with speeding among the most frequent offences and dozens of drivers found under the influence of alcohol.
From the early hours of August 17 until Monday morning, officers carried out nearly 27,000 breathalyzer tests, identifying 197 alcohol-related violations. The positive-test rate was 0.73%. Twenty-two drivers were arrested, including 14 whose readings exceeded 0.60 mg/l.
A total of 5,297 violations were recorded for speeding, helmet violations, mobile phone use, running red lights, driving without a license and other offences.
In a separate speeding campaign, police conducted 788 checks and recorded 276 violations. Two vehicles were detected traveling at 170 km/h and 165 km/h in areas where the speed limit was just 50 km/h.
Overall, 990 vehicles were stopped, with 79 towed away. Police also confiscated 926 driving licenses and 277 vehicle registration documents.
