Just 0.73% of drivers stopped for blood alcohol tests in the Greater Athens region over the past week were found to be legally drunk, authorities said Monday.
A police statement said nearly 27,000 breathalyser tests were conducted on major roads in and around the capital between August 17-24, and 197 motorists were found to be above the legal blood alcohol level.
It said 14 drivers were so much over the limit that they were arrested on the spot.
Traffic police also issued nearly 5,300 fines for other violations, including speeding, running red lights, talking on the phone while driving or not using seat belts or crash helmets.
A total 276 fines were issued for speeding, including one driver who was going at 170 kilometers an hour in a maximum 50kmh zone.
