The City of Athens is placing municipal services on heightened alert as temperatures are forecast to soar in the capital.
Starting Sunday, seven municipal senior centers will operate as air-conditioned cooling centers from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., for as many days as needed. The city will provide water, beverages and hygiene kits at the centers and facilities serving homeless people.
A 24-hour municipal helpline is available at 1595. A heat-health hotline offering medical advice operates daily from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 210 3638049.
Street outreach teams will work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to assist homeless people, providing cool drinking water and hygiene supplies.
The city has also installed more than 130 water stations for stray animals and is urging residents to keep them filled with fresh water.
