Greek authorities have ordered a temporary suspension of outdoor manual labor and two-wheeled delivery services in parts of the country on Wednesday as an intense heat wave is expected to push temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
The Labor Ministry said the mandatory work stoppage will be in effect from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Attica region, including Athens, as well as Thessaly, eastern Central Greece and the eastern Peloponnese, where the highest temperatures are forecast.
The measure applies to construction sites, public works, shipyards and other outdoor manual jobs, along with food and parcel deliveries by motorcycles, scooters and bicycles.
Restaurants and stores may continue accepting orders for pickup or delivery by air-conditioned cars and vans.
Hospitals, utilities and transport services are exempt because they are considered essential infrastructure but must implement additional heat protection measures.
