Safa are their own worst enemies. Instead of building on the foundation laid by former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, they seem hellbent on undoing everything – going back to where they started.
Broos vacated his Bafana post last month, ending his tenure on a high. He qualified for back-to-back Afcons, including claiming bronze at the delayed 2023 edition, while returning the team to the coveted World Cup for the first time since they hosted it in 2010.
Broos’s boys showed up at the global showpiece, reaching the knockout stage for the first time ever and following in the footsteps of their female and junior counterparts, Banyana Banyana and Amajita.
Over his five-year tenure, the Belgian built his team on core values such as competitiveness, discipline, including off the pitch, and camaraderie, effectively removing any influence of club allegiance.
