BAFANA Bafana coach Hugo Broos and captain Ronwen Williams during the FIFA World Cup 2026 South Africa Homecoming at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Thursday. Safa is being advised to retain Broos in an advisory role.

Revered football coach and former Bafana Bafana assistant Serame Letsoaka has advised Safa to retain Hugo Broos in an advisory capacity over the next few months to ensure a smooth handover and transition to his successor.

Broos’ contract officially concluded following Bafana’s elimination from the ongoing Fifa World Cup in North America, where he achieved a historic knockout-stage qualification for the first time in the country's four tournament appearances.

Given that milestone and his other successes, Broos is widely regarded as one of Bafana’s finest-ever coaches, drawing comparisons to the late Clive Barker, who won the 1996 Afcon and secured South Africa's first-ever World Cup qualification in 1998.

Broos’ foundation was largely built on doing things his way. He rewarded discipline and club form, completely tuning out the influence of clubs, agents, supporters, and media. Amid the strong bond he forged with the team and the country, Broos admitted it would be difficult to simply walk away, return to Belgium to reunite with his family, and head straight into retirement.
