He constantly makes inappropriate comments about women, even though he's married to the loveliest person, who I'm sure has no idea what he says when she's not around.Recently, I got really annoyed when I was out in a group with him and when his wife was out of earshot, he started commenting about how attractive another woman was, so I reminded him that he's married. He just said, "I'm well aware of that" and carried on.I hate that my husband hangs out with him so much, but whenever I've brought it up, he says, "He's just joking, he'd never do anything" or "He's a bit of a prat, but it's just the way he's always been".Am I overreacting to this? I don't think so. However, I'm aware that I can't really tell my husband who to be friends with. I don't want to be in his company, but it's tricky as he's part of a bigger group of friends. I feel his wife ought to know what he's like when she's not around, but I don't want to cause drama. What do you think?Coleen saysI'd say carry on not excusing his behaviour – walk away, don’t laugh at his "jokes" and if he says anything in your company that you find offensive or inappropriate, call it out. Let him know that it's not OK to speak like that in front of you and, hopefully, the penny will drop.He sounds like he's peacocking and showing off when his wife isn't around, which is really just a bit sad and immature. But just because your husband has been friends with him forever, doesn't mean he agrees with what he says or behaves in the same way when you're not around. And if you really don't want to be around him, then don't be. Your husband can see him for a drink on his own. But I don't know if I'd tell his wife what he says – there's a high chance she already knows what he's like and it might just cause bad feeling between the two of you.Unfortunately, we can't pick who our partners are friends with, but you don't have to get too involved. Quietly remove yourself from gatherings or, if you are out and he's there, do your best to ignore him. It sounds like he's the only one being a prat!Article continues belowColeen's words of wisdomConfidence is built and you build it every time you challenge yourself by pushing out of your comfort zone.
