The first staff at Avoca High School in 1966.

SIXTY years after opening, Avoca High (now secondary) School celebrated its diamond jubilee, bringing together former teachers and pupils to honour a legacy built on education, discipline and service.

The reunion, held at Liberty Hall on North Coast Road in Durban on Saturday, celebrated six decades of memories and achievements, as former teachers and pupils reflected on the role the school played in shaping generations of young people.

Among those looking back with pride was Deochand Ganesh, 87, one of the school’s founding teachers in 1966.

He said at the time, there were several primary schools in the area, but pupils completing their primary education had limited access to high school education locally.
