Madurai Collector Nishant Krishna hoisted the national flag and disbursed welfare assistance to beneficiaries at the 80th Independence Day celebrations held at the Armed Reserve Police Grounds here on Saturday.The Collector inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at a parade presented by the police, fire and rescue services personnel and home guards.Mr. Nishant Krishna honoured freedom fighters at the event and presented certificates of appreciation to a total of 230 government employees from various government departments and activists for their meritorious service. He distributed welfare assistance to the total tune of ₹48.62 lakh to 37 beneficiaries.Students from various schools in the district presented cultural performances. Traditional and cultural events were held as part of the Independence Day celebrations. The audience were captivated by their performance.Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Vijayendra Bidari, Madurai City Commissioner of Police S. Rajendran, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range) Abhinav Kumar, Superintendent of Police N. Devanathan and other officials were present at the event.The Collector presided over the gram sabha meeting held at S. Puliyankulam in Thirupparankundram panchayat union. The Collector felicitated sanitation workers at the meeting. A pledge was administered against drug abuse. Welfare assistance to the total tune of ₹1.21 lakh was distributed.The Collector participated in a community feast. Earlier, the Collector visited the Gandhi Memorial Museum.
