The 80th Independence Day celebrations were held at the District Sports Complex, Nagapattinam, on Saturday. District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar hoisted the national flag, inspected the guard of honour, and distributed welfare assistance worth ₹30.37 lakh to 29 beneficiaries.The assistance included a battery-powered wheelchair, hearing aid, gas-powered iron box, seed packets, fertilizers, loans to women’s self-help groups, Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme cards, and other welfare assistance.Certificates of appreciation were presented to 305 individuals from various government departments. The event featured cultural performances by schoolchildren. Keelvelur MLA T. Latha, Superintendent of Police Kelkar Subhramanya Bhalchandra and Tamil Nadu Minorities Economic Development Corporation Chairman A.P. Thameem Ansari were present.Later, Mr. Kumar participated in the grama sabha meeting held in Azhiyur village in the Nagapattinam block.N. Felix, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU), Nagapattinam, hoisted the national flag on the varsity campus. He paid tribute to freedom fighters and highlighted the 150th-year celebration of “Vande Mātaram” and the theme “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat 2047.” Dr. Felix highlighted India’s vision of a $30 trillion economy by 2047, the growth potential of the seafood export sector, and emerging areas such as 6G, semiconductors, green energy, hydrogen technology, and artificial intelligence.In Mayiladuthurai, Collector H.S. Srikanth hoisted the national flag at the SAI Sports Ground. He inspected a parade by police personnel, presented certificates of appreciation to 334 officials, including 59 police personnel, for exemplary service.
