Kanniyakumari Collector M. Prathap has directed government officials to promptly address the basic needs of people at the gram sabha meeting held at Thiruppathisaram on Saturday.The meeting was organised as part of the 80th independence day celebrations. Mr. Prathap attended the meeting as the chief guest and addressed the villagers.Highlighting the historical evidence of gram sabhas from Chola era inscriptions, he emphasised that the gram sabhas were one of the unique features of India.He underscored the importance of segregation of waste before handing it over to sanitation workers, and urged people not to dump garbage along the roadside. Girls should not be married before 18 years of age and they must be provided with higher education and employment opportunities.Applauding the significant increase in the girl child birth rate in Thovalai taluk over the past two years, he said it was heartening to see the number of girl children increasing in the area.
