Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap directed the officials to strengthen sanitation measures at tourist spots, clear encroachments and establish a checkpost to curb the use of banned plastic items being brought into the town.The Collector inspected several locations across the district and later chaired a review meeting at Kanniyakumari municipality office.He noted that Kanniyakumari has been witnessing steady influx of both domestic and international tourists. Stressing the importance of maintaining the town with complete hygiene, he instructed the officials to install additional trash cans to prevent indiscriminate disposal of garbage by visitors. He told the civic body officials to deploy sanitation workers particularly for tourist spots in the town.Mr. Prathap further directed the municipal and police officials to clear encroachments and streamline pedestrian pathways in the town. He also instructed officials to install a safety barrier at Triveni Sangamam to prevent tourists and visitors from venturing into deeper waters.The Collector directed the environment department officials to establish a checkpost to prevent plastic items being brought in the district. The officials were instructed to inspect the vehicle and seize banned plastic materials at the checkpost, and to implement the system within two weeks.The food safety department officials were instructed to inspect the restaurants and ensure that eligible establishments obtain necessary certifications. Municipal officials were directed to earmark separate space for roadside eateries.The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) was instructed to evict shops that hindered access to Poompuhar Shipping Corporation Limited’s ferry service.The police officials were instructed to maintain 24x7 surveillance and monitoring at major tourist congregation points in Kanniyakumari and ensure the safety and security of visitors.District Tourism Officer Kamaraj, Kanniyakumari Municipality Commissioner Pattusamy, District Environmental Officer Nellai Mani and officials from several other departments were present at the meeting.
