The DMK’s student wing staged a demonstration near Othakkalmandapam in Coimbatore on Friday condemning the murder of 19-year-old engineering student K. Amudhan and alleging that the State government had failed to maintain law and order.Amudhan, a third-year student at a private engineering college, was allegedly assaulted by a group of fellow students and died of his injuries.A party functionary alleged that the police had initially arrested only five persons in the case and claimed that further action was taken after the DMK announced the protest. She alleged that the police were being used to register cases and make arrests against the DMK instead of addressing the underlying law and order concerns.They said the clarification issued by the State government and the police that the incident was a fight between different student groups was misleading.The protesters demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister. They also questioned whether the government would provide a government job to the kin of the deceased student, similar to the employment assistance announced for the families of the Karur stampede victims.
