Police on Wednesday (August 12) arrested six persons and continued searches for at least 11 others, most of them students of a private college at Othakalmandapam near Coimbatore, in connection with the murder of a student of the institution near the campus on Monday (August 10).Police said that B. Aaramudhan (20) of Panruti in Cuddalore district, M. Aravind (21) of Manamadurai in Sivaganga district, S. Siva Rohith (20) of Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district, V. Mani Balu (20) of Sathanatham near Kunnam in Perambalur district, a 17-year-old boy from Tiruvallur district, and one Santhosh were arrested in connection with the murder of K. Amuthan (19) of Kallakurichi, a third-year undergraduate student of Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology. The first four accused are students of the same college, police said.Police were on the lookout for at least 11 others, including fourth-year student Deepak, who is suspected to have taken the lead in the murder. As per the statement given by Santhosh to police after his arrest, he was part of a team led by Deepak that assaulted Vanchit and Haridas, second-year students of the college, at a ground near the campus, on the night of August 9. Amudhan and his friend Sriman (19) came to know about the assault on their friends.To avenge the assault, Amuthan, Vanchit, Haridas and others went to the accommodation of Deepak and others at Othakalmandapam around 5.30 a.m. on Monday and assaulted them. Vanchit and Haridas went to Goa for an industrial visit after the incident, said the police.The Chettipalayam police registered a case in connection with the incident based on a complaint from a civil engineering student of the college.According to the police, Deepak and his friends planned to take revenge for the assault. They intercepted Amuthan and Sriman at Malumichampatti around 8.30 a.m. on Monday. They took the duo to the ground behind the campus and assaulted them. Amuthan returned to his accommodation around 10 a.m. and he developed breathing difficulty by 3 p.m. He was rushed to a hospital and died without responding to treatment.The Chettipalayam police registered a case based on the complaint of Sriman and arrested the six accused.Faculty from Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology told media persons on Wednesday that the institution had placed Amuthan and another student, Ajis, under suspension on July 24 for assaulting a cook of their hostel on the campus on July 21. The institution did not have knowledge that Amuthan stayed back in Coimbatore after the suspension.
