DMK cadre staged protests at 25 locations in Coimbatore district on Tuesday, condemning the arrest of the party’s youth wing leader and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin for his misogynist remarks at a public meeting in Thanjavur on Monday.Party workers assembled outside Gandhipuram bus stand in the city and staged a road blockade. They raised slogans against the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. The police detained and removed them as the protest brought traffic to a standstill.DMK supporters also staged protests at nine other locations in the city, including Selvapuram, Kuniyamuthur, Karumbukadai, Anna Silai and Kavundampalayam. A total of 547 people, including 62 women were detained.The Coimbatore District (Rural) Police detained and removed 745 DMK workers, including 78 women in protests held at 15 places.TVK stages protest against UdhayanidhiTVK cadres staged a protest near Red Cross junction in the city condemning Mr. Udhayanidhi’s remarks.TVK’s Kavundampalayam MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh took part in a protest in Chennai. “Those holding high positions in public life have a greater responsibility to maintain dignity and restraint in their words. Political disagreements are natural in a democracy, but remarks that demean women or hurt their dignity and respect are unacceptable under any circumstances,” Ms. Santhosh stated.
