Awat Karami, an environmental activist from Sanandaj, was arrested following a raid by security forces on his home in the village of Negel and transferred to an undisclosed location.
The human rights news agency HRANA reported that security agents raided the activist’s residence in Negel village, located in Sanandaj County, on the evening of Sunday, August 9, taking him into custody.
A source close to Karami’s family stated that the arrest occurred in front of his elderly mother and several village residents. According to the source, agents removed Karami from his home with his hands and feet bound.
To date, no information has been released regarding the arresting agency, Karami’s detention facility, or potential charges.
Karami, the son of Abdolhamid, has been active in environmental conservation and the protection of the Zagros oak forests in recent years. Using personal funds, he regularly provided medication, equipment, and first-aid supplies to assist local wildlife.
