As many as 502 complaints regarding the sale of narcotic substances have been received through the ‘Drug Free TN’ mobile application in the district.Collector S. Kandasamy in a release said, of the complaints received, First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered in 54 cases and swift action is being taken. A weekly review meeting on the prevention of illicit liquor, cannabis and other banned narcotic substances is being held every Monday under the chairmanship of the Collector.According to the release, between January and July 2026, the district police seized 354.845 kg of cannabis, 0.075 kg of methamphetamine, 1,444 cannabis chocolates weighing 7.660 kg, and 12,837 cannabis tablets. As many as 70 cases relating to cannabis were registered and fines totalling ₹22 lakh were imposed.The district administration has constituted 16 special teams to curb the sale and possession of banned narcotic substances. Officials from the police, Food Safety Department, local bodies and Health Department are part of the teams.The teams have seized 4,403.36 kg of banned tobacco products between January and July, and imposed fines totalling ₹1.74 crore. As many as 555 shops were closed for violating regulations and 470 people were arrested, the release said.Awareness programmes on the harmful effects of tobacco products have also been conducted at 3,371 locations through officials of various departments.
