The two girls charged in the brutal killing of 37-year-old Georgi Kuzev in Plovdiv have appealed their detention and are seeking to be released. The Plovdiv Court of Appeal is due to hear their appeals on Aug. 13 at 10 a.m.
Kuzev, who was from Krichim, was found in a critical condition by passers-by on Aug. 4. A call was made to the emergency number 112 at 5:29 p.m., and he was taken to hospital with a severe head injury, multiple fractures and internal injuries. He died several hours later despite doctors' efforts to save him.
Five teenagers, three boys and two girls aged between 14 and 17, have been charged with the killing. They are from Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and the village of Stroevo. Two of the defendants are 16 and have completed ninth grade, while one of the girls is 17 and the other is under 16. The youngest defendant is a 14-year-old boy who completed seventh grade this year.
The teenagers face charges of intentional murder committed in a particularly painful manner for the victim, with hooligan and sexual motives.
On Aug. 7, Judge Petko Minev of the Plovdiv District Court ordered all five to remain in custody. The judge later described the evidence he had reviewed in the case and the extent of the victim's injuries.
