OpenAI Commits $1.5 Billion to Georgia Data Centre Campus
OpenAI has announced a major infrastructure investment in Effingham County, Georgia, where it is building a data centre campus valued at approximately $1.5 billion. The project represents one of the company's most significant domestic infrastructure commitments to date and is framed explicitly as a community and economic development initiative as much as a technical one.
What OpenAI Is Building
The Effingham County campus will house the compute infrastructure required to train and serve AI models at scale. OpenAI has described the project in terms of its local economic impact — job creation, community partnerships and investment in regional infrastructure — alongside its technical purpose. The company has not published a detailed construction timeline, but the announcement positions this as an active development rather than a future proposal.
This follows a pattern of large-scale US data centre commitments from major AI companies and cloud providers. Microsoft, Google and Amazon have all announced multi-billion dollar domestic infrastructure programmes in the past 18 months, driven partly by policy pressure to keep AI compute on US soil and partly by genuine capacity constraints as demand for inference and training compute has grown faster than existing facilities can absorb.
