Kanniyakumari District Police have announced that both riders and pillion passengers on two-wheelers must wear helmets from August 15..Violations will be detected through ‘Kaaval AI’ surveillance cameras installed at several locations across the district, as part of the ‘Zero Accident Kumari’ initiative aimed at reducing fatalities in two-wheeler accidents. A fine amount of ₹1,000 will be imposed on violations detected through the AI-enabled cameras.A significant proportion of deaths and serious injuries in road accidents involve pillion riders. With the objective of preventing such casualties, road-safety measures in the district are being intensified based on the instructions of Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin.The AI-enabled cameras, installed along with digital screens are currently operational at several locations in the district including Collectorate Roundabout, Vadasery, Chettikulam, APPTA market, Parvathipuram, Anjugramam, Vivekanandapuram, Karungal, Azhagiyamandapam, Thiruthuvapuram and Karungal.The district police are also planning to install more AI-based cameras and digital display screens at major junctions, with priority being given to accident prone areas. The initiative launched with the objective to promote helmet usage among two-wheeler riders, is now being expanded to pillion passengers as well, with the aim of bringing about a behavioural change.In a press release, the Kanniyakumari district police said that imposing fines was not its objective, but its primary aim was to guide motorists towards safe travel and ensure the peace of mind of their family members.The police further added that a penalty of ₹1,000 would be imposed, while the driving licence of repeat offenders may be suspended for up to three months.
